Used vs new catering equipment: is second-hand worth it?
Fitting out a commercial kitchen with new equipment can cost tens of thousands of pounds. Buying used can cut that dramatically, but is it the right choice for you? Here's an honest comparison.
The cost difference
Used commercial equipment is often half the price of new, or less, depending on its age, condition and brand. On big-ticket items like combi ovens and espresso machines, the saving can be several thousand pounds per item. For a new business that money can go into stock, staff or marketing instead.
Reliability
Commercial catering equipment is built to work hard for many years and to be repaired rather than thrown away. A well-maintained used machine from a quality brand is often more reliable than a new budget model. The key is buying from someone who checks equipment before selling it.
What's best bought used
- Stainless steel tables, sinks and shelving: they don't wear out, so used is as good as new.
- Heavy duty gas ranges: simple, tough machines with few parts to fail.
- Combi ovens and espresso machines: the biggest savings, as long as they've been serviced and descaled.
- Refrigeration from good brands: built to run 24/7 and easy to repair.
- Mixers and food prep machines: robust and long-lasting.
When new might make sense
- When you need a very specific model or size that's hard to find used.
- When you want the longest possible manufacturer's warranty.
- When you need the very latest energy-efficient technology.
Availability
Used equipment is often available immediately, while new equipment can have lead times of weeks. If you're opening soon or something has broken down, that matters.
It's better for the planet
Every used machine back in service is one less going to scrap and one less being manufactured. Reusing commercial equipment is one of the simplest ways to make a kitchen more sustainable.
Our advice
Most kitchens get the best value from a mix of both. Buy used where the saving is biggest and the risk is lowest, and talk to someone who knows the equipment. That's what we've been doing for over 30 years. Tell us what you're planning and we'll give you an honest view.
